DeskGear Monitor Format Score
DeskGear Monitor Format Score is a 0โ10 DeskGearHQ composite scored across 4 weighted components. It ranks 3 products across 1 guide, last updated 2026-07-27.
Score formula
(Pixel Density x 0.30) + (Workspace Flexibility x 0.25) + (Color & HDR x 0.25) + (Value per Dollar x 0.20)What each component measures
| Component | Weight | What it measures |
|---|---|---|
| Pixel Density | 30% | How sharp text and fine UI elements render at the format's native scaling โ a real 2x panel versus a scaled one. |
| Workspace Flexibility | 25% | How many independent windows or apps a reader can genuinely see at once without overlap or tiling software. |
| Color & HDR | 25% | Wide-gamut accuracy and real HDR contrast for photo, video, and media-heavy work. |
| Value per Dollar | 20% | What the format costs at the panel count actually needed to use it as a whole setup, not a single list price. |
How to read the number
A 7.8 for the 5K panel doesn't mean it's a worse monitor than the 8.6 dual-4K setup โ each product keeps the score it earns on its own merits, shown on the product cards above. The Format Score answers a different question: which shape fits how you actually work. It rewards the format that renders the sharpest text, opens the most usable windows, handles color and HDR well, and costs the least at the setup size needed โ so a premium single panel can be an excellent display and still land lower here than a cheaper pair that does more parallel work. Scores synthesize RTINGS, DisplayNinja, Wirecutter, 9to5Mac, and Macworld coverage plus live Amazon Creators API pricing.

| Product | Score | Why it lands there |
|---|---|---|
| LG 27UP850-W 27" 4K | 8.6 | Tops the format lens on flexibility and value โ two independent 4K panels for less combined money than either single premium display. |
| LG 45GX950A-B 45" 5K2K OLED Ultrawide | 8.3 | Best color and HDR of the three, plus genuine multitasking width; density is its only real trade-off against a 5K panel. |
| Apple Studio Display (Standard Glass, Tilt-Adjustable Stand) | 7.8 | Unmatched pixel density for one focused window; the priciest single panel here and the least flexible for parallel work. |
How DeskGearHQ scores anything
DeskGear Monitor Format Score is a category-specific composite. It sits on top of the site-wide framework: DeskGearHQ does not run a testing lab, and every score is an editorial synthesis of named expert sources, manufacturer documentation, and practitioner-community signal โ explicitly not a laboratory measurement. The base DeskGear Score, its factor definitions, the full source stack, and the refresh policy are documented on the methodology page.
